Since the age of 15 I have been searching for the best shade of red. This obsession with red lipstick began mainly because I saw my favorite artist Brandy with a pretty color of Red in one of her videos. We were the same age so I begged my Mom to watch the video. After I wore my Mom down with constant begging and video proof my Mom said ok " you can wear Red as long as it doesn't look too grown" LOL . I took all of this excitement to so many counters and I settled on a not so parent pleasing red transparent lipstick called Black Honey from Clinique which I still wear. Since this precious time in my life I have definitely rotated some core red shades in my beauty repertoire. Some of my faves are Iman's Red, MAC's Ruby Woo and Nars Dragon Fly.
I get so many questions from my clients about finding the perfect Red for them or being scared to even try the color at all. I love how a red can make me look either classic or fierce depending on my outfit. Why not try it. So I feel like this InStyle.com article is the holy grail of research on finding a fierce red. The writer expertly reviews and recommend different shades of lipstick based off of celebs of different skin tones and pro picks from their MUA's. Another plus is that this article is inclusive to every skin tone. That's the cherry on top. Enjoy this informative article and start trying some face flattering reds.

1. Fair with Cool Undertones
A raspberry lipstick like Bite’s Cashmere Lip Cream in Sancerre (on Diaz and swipe at top) ($28; sephora.com) “complements and warms up the cool pink undertones found in very fair skin,” says Cameron Diaz’s makeup artist Robin Fredriksz. A creamy formula pops just enough.
Kevyn Aucoin Expert Lip Color in Jorjia (at bottom, $35; bergdorfgoodman.com)
Jane’s Intense Color Lip Gloss (at right, $7; janecosmetics.com)
2. Fair with Red Hair
Contrary to popular belief, redheads can rock a bold red lip. "Look for a red with orange undertones if you have Holland Roden's coloring to spice up the effect," says makeup artist Elle Leary, who mixed Stila's Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Fiery ($22; nordstrom.com) with NYX Cosmetics' Butter Lipstick in Hot Tamale ($6; ulta.com). "I love coral-reds on redheads with fair skin because it adds a flash of color to the milky tone that wasn't there before."
A pinkish red like Lipstick Queen’s Velvet Rope in Private Party (on Rossum and at bottom right) ($50; spacenk.com) is best suited to medium-light complexions, especially if you dab it on with your finger to get an imperfectly diffused finish, says Rossum’s pro Jo Baker.

Flower Kiss Stick in Rosey Garden ($7; walmart.com)
A deep vivid berry like NARS’ Satin Lip Pencil in Luxembourg (swipe at top) ($26; narscosmetics.com) brings warmth and radiance to golden skin tones. The actress, who did her own makeup, says the shade must be fully pigmented. “Sheer reds make my face look dull.”

Soap amp Glory’s Sexy Mother Pucker Lip Lacquer in Riot ($24; sephora.com)
Yves Saint Laurent Gloss Volupte-207 ($32; barneys.com)
5. Medium with Yellow Undertones
Olive, have you met orange? Complexions with yellow undertones turn a glowing tan with a little help from a tangerine-tinged bullet, says Ferrera’s pro Matin Maulawizada. To score her exact shade, swipe on Iman Cosmetics Luxury Moisturizing Lipstick in Hot (at bottom right) ($9; walmart.com).

6. Medium with Gold Undertones
A medium complexion with light golden tones jibes with “a true red,” says Rita Ora’s makeup artist Kathy Jeung, who used Rimmel’s Lasting Finish Lipstick in A Kiss of Life (at top left) ($6; rimmellondon.com) on the star. “If you detect any undertones in the lipstick, they should be orange, not blue.”

Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Vengeful Red ($30; sephora.com)
Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids in Neon Red ($8; maybelline.com)
7. Medium with Neutral Undertones
"Sofia's skin is warm with a neutral undertone, making the blue-red hue of CoverGirl's lipstick in Garnet Flame ($7; covergirl.com for locations), a perfect shade of red for her look," says makeup artist Jen Flemming. "If you're having trouble with the undertone equation, true reds that do not lean blue or orange are always winners."
Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Lip Color in Hollywood (bottom left, $27; lauramercier.com)
NARS Audacious Lipstick in Carmen (bottom right, $32; narscosmetics.com)
8. Medium with Caramel Tones
A brown-based red like L’Oreal Colour Riche in Raisin Rapture (at top center) ($9; drugstore.com ) is a pretty perfect match for caramel skin like Freida Pinto’s. Just make sure the hue has a hint of plum to contrast with your complexion, and a shimmery finish to enhance the glamour.

9. Tan with Warm Undertones
With a successful line with MAC already under her belt, Rihanna certainly knows a thing or two about finding a lipstick to flatter her complexion. "I pulled out a few colors for her to choose from to inspire her on new shades, and Rihanna picked the lipstick in So Chaud ($16; maccosmetics.com)," says her makeup artist Mylah Morales. If you have similar coloring to the star, follow in her lead by choosing an orange-based red, which will complement the warmth in your skin.
Tom Ford Lip Color in Wild Ginger (bottom left, $50; tomford.com)
10. Tan with Neutral Undertones
Though tan or olive skin with neutral tones like Kim Kardashian's can veer toward either side of the lipstick spectrum, a bright cherry red with a slight glossy sheen will really pop against your complexion. "It also looks great paired with golden and natural shades of makeup on the eyes," says the star's makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic, who used the Bare Minerals Marvelous Moxie Lip Liner in Amped ($15; bareescentuals.com) as a base, then layered Tom Ford's Lip Color Shine in Willful ($50; nordstrom.com) over the top. "It's a bright coral red with a creamy consistency. I layered it a couple of times for more coverage, as it can be a bit sheer."
Dolce and Gabbana Classic Cream Lipstick in Red 620 ($33; sephora.com)
Rouge Dior Lipstick in Rouge Cannage ($35; nordstrom.com)
11. Tan with Cool Undertones
With a deep merlot as flattering as Kerry Washington's, you can take the minimalist route on your eye makeup and allow your pout to be the focal point. To complement her complexion, the star's makeup artist Carola Gonzalez layered on the Rouge D'Armani lipstick in 609 ($35; giorgioarmanibeauty-usa.com), a blue-based wine hue, then added a layer of Neutrogena's Lip Color Stick in Raisin ($8; target.com), which created a barely-there sheen.
Lorac Pro Matte Lip Color in Merlot ($16; ulta.com)
12. Dark with Warm Undertones
“An opaque blue based red like MAC’s Ruby Woo (bottom left) ($16; maccosmetics.com) creates a gorgeous contrast with dark caramel complexions,” says Jennifer Hudson’s makeup whiz Yolonda Frederick-Thompson. “A matte surface makes it stand out even more.

13. Dark with Cool Undertones
One word: Metallic. “A creamy ruby red lipstick like Lancome’s L’Absolu Rouge in Rouge Velour (at bottom left) ($31; nordstrom.com) needs shimmer to bring dimension and luminosity to deep cocoa skin,” says Lupita Nyong’O’s makeup artist Nick Barose.
BeautiControl Hydra Brilliance Lipstick in Garnet ($18; beauticontrol.com)
Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Adora ($21; sephora.com)
14. Dark with Cool Undertones
If a shimmery metallic finish is too flashy for you, take a note out of Alek Wek's book and pick up a wine-hued gloss-we love Guerlain's Rouge Parade version ($30; guerlain.com). The deep berry hints play up the cool tones in your complexion, while the mirror-like finish adds extra dimension.
Kevyn Aucoin The Lip Gloss in Bloodroses ($30; net-a-porter.com)
